"Six books richer" - that's how I'm describing my book buying from now on 😅

Loving Jack's New York City era. I can feel his joy each time he gets to visit a new enormous bookstore :')

I momentarily forgot that Jack was taking writing classes so when it cut to him saying "I have class" at 1:03 I thought he was just trying to reassure himself that buying poetry books was not, in fact, a trashy thing to do

I'm not sure if all her collections are translated to English, but I feel like you would absolutely love Patrizia Cavalli's poetry. It's punchy, down to earth, self-deprecating while still being very lyrical. She was a somewhat openly lesbian Italian poet. Highly recommended!

I would have to agree, poetry collections do have the best titles.

Book of Hours - a collection by Ranier Maria Rilke. Just get it. It will have you sitting, contemplating and reading again. It will become a best friend. Rilke also has “Letters to a Young Poet”— these are literally letters that were never intended to be published. Rilke writes everyday letters as if it were the most eloquent of poetry. Yet they include the most down to earth advice to any poet wishing to be heard.

Just when Jack couldn’t be more charming, here comes the renovation project for his Poetry Collection.

Also, keep rocking the Sweater Vest Combo.

Dylan Thomas: rage, rage, against the dying of the light, do not go gentle into that good night. Favorite poem so far!

I find that poetry is a really good refresher from prose sometimes! usually writing + reading poetry helps influence my fiction in a way I wouldn't have otherwise been able to play with

I majored in English Literature because i fell in love with a lot of contemporary poetry in high school
So excited that I recognized the books and poets you showed in the store! I hope you enjoy reading Warsan Shire! I suggest you read Safia Elhillo’s “the january children” it has such vivid imagery and gorgeous storytelling

To be honest I feel very intimidated by poetry collections. I tried to read a few but always gave up soon after because I couldn't understand much or it required too much of my energy to stay engaged. Probably a lot of it is because English is my second language and while my vocabulary is pretty advanced it is not usually enough for me to understand difficult, fancy words used in poetry. Having to check some words from books I read doesn't bother me - the opposite really, it makes me feel like I'm making progress - but having to do it constantly while simultaneously trying to decipher the meaning of a particular poem is a bit much for me.
So my question is - can someone recommend me poetry collections that you consider great and thought-provoking but that don't necessarily demand too much effort to grasp?

Not to add more to the pile, but I spotted Frank O’Hara’s Lunch Poems on one of the display tables and it might be another good pick.

It’s a collection based on his lunch breaks wandering around NYC and what he notices. Narration for your current adventure!

Yes!! That was the first Warsan Shire collection I read and I loved it so much. She’s become one of my favorite poets. I don’t pretend to know what good poetry is, but I sure know how some poetry makes me feel vs others that seem like it’s not really saying anything. I’ve been done very dirty before by poetry with an eye catching cover and interesting title 🫣 but I still like picking up something I’ve never heard of before when I’m also buying something I’m actually seeking out.

I've commented this before, but i think it would be a really fun episode to read translated Greek books. I'm Greek and there are so many amazing books that I'd love to hear your opinion (one of my favorites is imaret by Yiannis Kalpouzos)
