Yes, divorce was an option, but he knew that he wouldn’t get custody and he would be making large monthly alimony and child support payments- probably a half million dollars over the next 18 years and he was afraid his new girlfriend might leave him because of those financial obligations. He would rather annihilate his current family and hope to get away with it than be stuck with those obligations. He’s a terrible person.
