You might want to orient the gri gri the opposite way, with the black side facing the wall and the lever facing away. That prevents the lever and cammimg device from getting pinned against the wall (which would leave the cam open and allow the follower to fall until the rope's end), or you could attach the belay device to yourself.

For any of you fools that are bitching about this technique being dangerous. It is documented and the AMGA teaches it in their rock guide and single pitch instructor courses.

"Take up slack regularly as the second climbs, always holding the brake side of the rope. This method of belaying the second is less than ideal: in this position, the GRIGRI's braking action on the rope is not optimal (especially with thin ropes). In addition, the risk of blocking the cam is greater. We therefore recommend a different technique, using a redirect point."   as per PetzlJust because you can do it doesn't mean you should...

Hello,
I was just looking for this technique at the grigri brochure, but Petzl does not inform anything about it.
However, Petzl do warn that the grgri should not be attached to a fix point, as the ground.
So, I was wondering how dangerous could be when the grigri is attached as an autoblock device (like the ATC guide) to belay the second, considering that the at achor point is a fixed point.
I really would like to use the grigri on this way, but I'm kind doubting about the safety of this technique.

Best regards!

hi, i think use grigri like this can be potentialy dangerous because if the cam for any reason is block ( i mean the technic to give slack quickely )your second could be not stop in case of fall . so i suppose it's the reason why petzl does not inform anything about it. by the way it is working but be very carefull about the positionning of grigri . i prefer the reverso or atc guide it's cheaper and safer ;) sorry for my english ! bye

NEGuiding you know what I think is comical? when people talk crap on anchoring with a daisy, it's totally acceptable just as long as you don't clip thru 2 loops... there is a right way and a wrong way to do things and just because she's using it ...doesn't mean it's the wrong way... Also she looks backed up with a sling... so get out of here with the whole "YER GONNA DIE " if you use a daisy

You're giving out climbing tips yet the girl/belayer is anchored into the anchor with a daisy chain/sling? lol! Your videos keep getting more amusing. Take some courses from professional mountain guides please before someone gets hurt.
