## Pros and Cons of "Generative AI is a Parasitic Cancer"
*Pros*
- "Generative AI is a Parasitic Cancer" provides a case study on search engines and the effect AI has had on its results, followed by a critical perspective on the ethics of AI from an emotional and personal standpoint
- Her argument is more from an emotional and storytelling perspective, rather than the usual financial or environmental claims about the issues of generative AI, which may provide new insight into why people may be against this technology.
- Freya managed to release a lower effort edited video, which means she's likely making progress on the crippling perfectionism which has thwarted several videos in the past

*Cons*
- Freya covers topics that may be considered depressing to some, including AI and mental health
- Unlike other videos on YouTube, this video does not contain the usual math content you may be used to
- The comment section for this video in particular is unlikely to be fruitful for furthering the topic of AI ethics
- The inflammatory title means this is likely low quality content
- The video lacks music, except for one place where she used a very outdated song she created as a student, for a game project that wasn't very well received by a jury of peers.

## The Bottom Line
generative AI is a parasitic cancer

## In Summary
we don't need this

FAQ/clarification thread:

Q: Aren't some of these more likely content mill/cheap labor used to write corporate slop, rather than AI?
A: Some might very well be, but, 1. the articles are polluting just as much regardless, and 2. AI will exponentially grow and encourage this kind of slop regardless, and 3. Corporate humans coercing other cheap labor humans into writing slop is arguably even worse than just using gpt directly. maybe it's just me but I don't exactly find solace in the idea of using pseudo-slave-labor to write AI-grade digital pollution. I should've probably done more research on this, but also, this was recorded in an improvised 4h ramble the day after, and I've been explicitly trying to be less perfectionist, because it leads to me never releasing anything. the downside is of course potential mistakes like this, where I should've read up on something beforehand. But I felt like I had to act quickly while I was still in it, mentally, otherwise this would be another video on the pile that never made it out. It doesn't of course change my main points, even if literally all of them were content mill stuff, but, in the end, I guess in that case I accidentally showcased a real instance of how chemotherapy accidentally targets healthy cells too

Q: Is the description of the video AI generated?
A: no lol but I'm gonna take that as a compliment in this one rare instance!

Q: Is the thumbnail AI generated?
A: I stole the green tentacles from an already generated image from stable diffusion's website, otherwise no. I figured this is the one instance I'm gonna use AI imagery because it's literally supposed to represent AI! The rest I cobbled together in photoshop as usual, using some screenshots of search bars etc.

Q: How many cats do you have?
A: Three! Salad is the white fluffball napping throughout the entire footage. Thor is the tuxedo cat walking across my desk near the end of the video. Finally, Toast is the guy who unplugged my monitor in the added footage! Also toast and salad are brothers. I figured this would be important information

My grandmother died last year. I wrote a poem to be included in the funeral program that was given to all the attendees. After the service, someone came up to me and complimented me on the poem, then immediately followed up by asking if I wrote it myself or used AI. I'm still struggling to find a way to articulate how that interaction made me feel. It's like everyone signed a contract to forfeit our humanity and I somehow missed the memo.

If no one was bothered to write it, I don't want to be bothered to read it.

The amount of times I've had to add "reddit" or "before:2022" in my searches to get to actual humans has been absurd

The scale of this terrifies me. Imagine how much energy, land, water, resources, money we’re burning into this dead internet.

In 2005 you extracted value from the Internet. In 2025, the Internet extracts value from you.

My boss started using AI generated meeting notes and I have gone from "GenAI is a useful tool being overhyped." to "this is borderline useless tech." As you describe, the notes are *so* wordy and convey so little information. We have a 30 minute meeting and get 2 to 3 pages of notes that are only about 90% accurate.

My job is *much* worse when I got to ask someone what happened in a short meeting I could not attend and I get told to check this shit. It reads like an 8th grader trying desperately to make their book report page limit.

I'm a teacher. They're trying to push generative AI "tools" for educators. We had a whole fucking professional development seminar about using these slop machines at my last school. I noped the fuck out of there as soon as I could. How can we as educators admonish our students for using AI to cheat when their teachers are using it to generate the assignments? It disgusts me. Like a true, deep moral revulsion.

Generative AI is honestly, the ultimate proof that being more "productive" is not always a good thing.

Productivity is worthless if all you're producing is mindless slop.

Thank you for making this video.
As an artist, and someone who digs art in general, the AI bullshit has been rough.
I can't shut it out, people around me are talking about it, constantly reminding me how the potential loss of something so vital to me "isn't even the worst that can happen" or "isn't so bad" (a friend basically wants to start an AI worshipping cult yay). Hell, my familly who considers themselves anti AI bought AI generated christmas decorations !
There also the case of a guy pushing very freaking hard his adds for AI tools training. On facebook groups meant to find jobs in the animation and videogame industry. He even had the galls to quote "I have a dream" in one of his adds.
I can't shut it out because it's wormed its way everywhere around me. There's a sense of hopelessness, of being completely cornered, and even people who are in the damn art buisness are looking forward to that !
I've had to hear someone pitch his "dream game made entirely in AI, so that a game could finally have a soul" ! I can't. Games already have souls damnit (at least when the industry doesn't sand it off)

I'm not even a big artist, hell I'm not an average artist. I'm a complete nobody, and now even if I succed, the most I can look forward to is having my voice taken from me and my art made into the most dead-inside version of itself so someone else can get the credit.
It's an artist's existential nightmare in two damn letters.

So yeah, thanks for making this video. Because maybe for the first time since this started I feel like I'm not alone in this.
Because knowing this is what I hang on to when I feel like deleting my accounts and art off of the internet, and giving up on sharing it.
Because that's what art is about. Knowing you're not alone.

As an undergraduate computer science student, I am frustrated by the fact that my professors are all researching AI, and because I need one of them to supervise my bachelor's thesis, I am also forced to research AI... like, since when did computer science become equivalent to AI research?

I am old enough to remember the excitement of the early internet. The ability to share knowledge with anyone in the world, how that would revolutionise everything. I invested so much of my young adulthood into. But over the past few years, I've becoming increasingly disillusioned. The digital world was so full of hate, grift, and misinformation, my joy was being sucked out. And now generative AI has come along... I just can't anyone more. I hate it. I hate the internet, I stopped going on social media, stopped making art, I don't care about memes anymore or video games. I despise it, it makes me so miserable to be in contact with.

I've taken up gardening, loads of physical hobbies like climbing and rollerskating, I cook more often. I feel like I am back in the 90s again, before the internet. I can't tell if I am just old, and missing out on the next industrial revolution, or if Gen AI is as loathable as I feel it is. I hate it. I won't buy anything or support anyone who uses this stuff. It's death to the soul.

I'm guessing this will be one of those comment sections that will quickly turn toxic so I'm just enjoying my time here while it's nice and calm. hope you're doing well, whoever is reading this <3

What I find frightening about the way algorithms work today is that when you get videos and news tailored to your interests, you start to think that important issues like the sketchy circumstances under which AI is being developed and deployed are already being debated and in the public consciousness, when in fact most people are neither informed nor concerned about how these technologies will affect their lives.

Just wanted to tell thanks. Depression is hard and it was the right choice to silence all the media related to the cause. Media feeds on dread and like to bloat everything out of proportion, so it is a good idea to just not listen to them.

It's crazy, i work in the IT and even if you ask colleagues how to do x or y, they do so often response with: "idk ask chatgpt". We had someone who should write a Software and write his bachelor thesis about that software. Completly AI generated and the university haven't noticed. It is also not restricted to use generative ai at that university. The bad thing, in the Industry your Grade matters alot atleast where i live. The meaning of the grade loose all his value to this. Thanks for your Video and all your videos you have produced. On Reddit you're the recommended source for gamedev math, so continue to make great tutorials because many many many people prefer learning from someone passionated instead of an ai.

I'm a software engineer and usually when friends or family ask me about my thoughts on AI I reply with some version of "neural networks have some cool legitimate uses in approximating prohibitively algorithms, but are not intelligent and the hype about AI right now is mostly misplaced". I have lately been very frustrated about the proliferation of these AI slop websites whenever I try to search for literally any information. This video has gotten me to think about how big this problem really is, so from now on when people ask I will sound the alarm about the deeply antisocial and destructive nature of generative AI.

Thank you for explaining why I feel dread. I could never articulate what made me feel so threatened as a non-artist, but the potential loss of meaning and purpose in life (especially as an atheist) is exactly it.

If the entire internet becomes AI "art" and "blog posts" I know I can always come back to this channel for quality content from a real human with knowledge and passion.
