Have you ever thrown out food that looked totally fine - because it was expired? It turns out that food expiry dates aren't totally truthful with when the food goes bad, and it's contributing to a massive amount of food waste. With that in mind, I wanted to learn more about expiry dates, why they exist, and how we can consume more responsibly.

As a Chef, i can tell you that you need to trust your senses. Expiration dates are completely irrelevant other than a requirement. Smell it, feel it, taste it, look at it. If any of these are off, you know something is wrong.

I love to go in the 50% supermarket section where products soon expire and to buy them. I always follow my sense (smell, how it looks, taste) as my own expire date. Just yesterday, I finished a glass of mustard that expired Feb 24.

I never have taken those dates very serious, helpful for buying steak, the date gives me an idea when it is ready to eat, kilke rather not before.

I think people tend to forget once you've made some sort of food. You're already putting it in a refrigerator which is blocking out random oxygen which will age it faster in a container or drawer. Just block down even more oxygen helping it last longer and then because it's lasting longer. It forms its own kind of oxidized area around itself, just like everything else that hux does. So until whatever bacteria typically devours that food from the air breaks that barrier, especially with something like yoga that has a lot of fat or salt. That food will remain good for weeks if not months depending on the food etc. It feels like we're training people to not think about their food at all, despite tons of people having problems with digestion and affording food. So they're not even learning what's actually bad to digest and they're not strengthening their gut or their immune system by digesting things that aren't perfectly right or have passed our expiration a little bit IRL. Even a mold in your system is probably good for you told on every tree you walk past and smell. What do you think that smell of the tree is? duh?

Very good video 👍 I'm a swede and its the same here. I have long asked the same questions. The producers are obligated to set expire dates by law. Often it have nothing to do with how long your food is edible. I always use my senses because waste is just so unnessesary.

Foods that contain plant based oils will start to taste bad as the oil oxidizes. It's safely edible... but tastes horrible. Think ancient Tostitos that were still sealed in the bag, but smells more like vehicle fuel than food when opened..

If our senses couldn't detect what can kill us, there wouldn't be any humans. You kind of need a little training: You will likely need to taste a few spoiled items before you know better by just scent. PSA: Keep something handy to rinse your mouth. Don't consume anything that any of your sense say is not right. You also need to not have any compromised senses. For example: Don't try to check if something is safe after eating something soaked in vinegar.
