Dozens of Soviet-era statues in Latvia are to be removed or destroyed. A committee of experts in Riga made the decision. When the list is finalised, statues and plaques will either be destroyed or if they have artistic value, put into storage.

Replace the Soviet monuments and replace them with memorials about the Soviet war crimes and post war oppression against the Latvian people!

Latvia should set up a park like the one that exists in Lithuania in which these Soviet and communist monuments can be placed. That way, the Latvians will not be constantly reminded in the centres of their cities of the Soviet conquest and occupation, but history will still be preserved.

The monument glorifies victory of a criminal totalitarian dictatorship (over whoever) and such must be removed. Instead we have in the Center of Riga monument of final victory of freedom for all people (over whoever). Everyone who feels he or his loved ones have fought for freedom. That includes all people -
Latvians. Russians or Chines. Everyone who really likes freedom and not one or other totalitarian/authoritarian dictatorships is free to go and celebrate victory of freedom in front of Freedom monument

I understand that these monuments could cause pain to many Latvians . The country has suffered terrible repression. However, an insult as Gandhi said can always be turned on its emitter. The Soviet monuments should be left to decay as a symbol of the past and that the Latvian nation is a free state today and still remains, even after a brutal occupation. Destroying an offensive monument doesn’t change history . It should remind you of you to defend your future .
