Bangladesh's top court has scrapped most of the quotas on government jobs that had sparked violent clashes across the country that have killed more than 100 people.

A third of public sector jobs had been reserved for the relatives of veterans from the country’s war for independence from Pakistan in 1971.

But after widespread protests, the court has ruled just 5% of the roles can be reserved for veterans' relatives.

A nationwide curfew remains in place, as sporadic clashes are reported to have continued in some areas.

The fact that such a quota ever existed is ridiculous.

Shameless nepotism in Bangladesh! Job opportunities should be given by merit, not by lineages

I am a Bangladeshi. Currently I am living in the Uk. There is not mobile network, internet connection, and Wi-Wi-Fi in our country. Since last three days I have no contact with my family in back home. The govt is killing the innocent students and the ordinary people who are helping students. Almost 300+ students were killed by Bangladesh government. Many students are Under 18. They are school children. The government is doing genocide now. We want the resignation of current prime minister Shekh Hasina. She is the most wanted criminal.

I urge the United Nations and Human right organizations to help our students and save their lives and ensure the human rights in Bangladesh.

The government can cancel this verdict again if it wants. Then it is understood that this is a new trick of the government

The quota was 56%, but, at 2018, after students demands and protests, Awami league govt, Prime minister Sk Hasina made it 0%. But, after getting the situations under control, this cunning woman, Sk Hasina wanted to put it back by 56% throughout High court . Now, in 2024, again after students protests, the cunning woman, Sk Hasina ordered the Supreme court to reduce the quota as soon as possible, so the Supreme Court did it by 7%. Therefore, you may understand easily that who runs the courts actually? Not only justices of the court, but also every sections of the govt jobs and public bodies, Sk hasina filled her men throughout quota systems including police, army, election commission, universities teachers. There is no opposition party in the country who can stand up against the awami league govt. They killed and jailed all of the members of the opposition parties in the country.

Its not 5%, the court rulling also includes a line at the end...if PM wishes she can change the allocation anytime she wants....the judiciary system has always been a tool for the rulling party to exploit

I am a Bangladeshi, currently live in Denmark for higher studies. As a current student, I demand the resignation of the current government and the implementation of proper justice regarding the brutal shooting that resulted in the deaths of over three hundred innocent students and the injury of more than a thousand others.
