Calm Returns to Bangladesh Amid Curfew After Supreme Court Scraps Job Quotas
Показать описание
Bangladesh remained calm on Monday (June 22) under a curfew, following the Supreme Court's decision to scrap certain government job quotas, which had led to protests killing scores earlier this month. Clashes resulting from the reinstatement of job reservations removed in 2018 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government resulted in 139 deaths. The Supreme Court mandated that 93% of government jobs be based on merit, replacing the previous 56% reserved for specific groups. There were no reports of violence on Monday, with curfew hours slightly relaxed. Despite the calm, student protesters plan to continue demonstrations demanding the release of detained leaders and reopening of universities closed since July 17.
