Is Serum 2 really that bad as a virtual analog?

Serum2 arrived out of the blue, everyone was waiting for it, even those who didn't know, and everyone is talking about it... now like its predecessor, its facing the usual critics, is there any substance to them? Watch the video, and let me know what you think

More specifically please leave a comment saying what you can infer, at a minimum which among the basses and the leads you think is played by Serum2, or if you feel golden eared enough, to identify them one by one...good luck with that.

Here's my gumroad, full of patches for Vital, but with also some free ones for SurgeXT.
Want some for Zebra? Just ask in the comments :)

Here are my first and albums as Eùoè with @Oblium 's Labyrinthine Crew

and if you like links, here's a lot more, my music, my social profiles... you know, that stuff

Just like Serum 1, Serum 2 is clean sounding by default. But it provides you all the tools to make it sound analog if you want.

i love the style you are developing ! my guesses are green for the bass and orange for the lead.

whether or not serum 2 is "analog sounding" shouldn't be the topic. I think what makes serum 2 such a big deal is it streamlines the process of modulation and mangling wave shapes, it is somehow much more efficient yet jam packed with extra goodies, its almost an all in one kind of deal. the amount of money you'd have to fork out for hardware to do the same things serum does would be nearing 3k+ sure it sound better on a very minute scale. but how much of an audience is really going to tell with the quality when its downgraded on a steaming platform anyway. all in all I think serum 2 saves people so much time and so much money. its extremely hard to argue how good it is for its price point. like hey I don't have to fork out an extra 100$ for a granulizer plug in. ultimately it comes down to the tool is only as good as the person that uses it.

Analog sound and digital sound are subjective concepts. Say about this forever. I love it, thanks for it. Need more, more, more!

Sound of this examples are very simple.
Rosso sounds the best, so it's Surge.
Violetta 2 sounds the best, so it's Surge.
Where Serum no idea.

I think is that when forming a sound wave through an analog device, there are physical limitations that affect the waveform and frequency response of the sound. For example, some elements of an electrical circuit mute high frequencies, some low. And there are many more that affect the signal (examples amplifiers). And It's not noticeable on simple sounds, but on complex sounds it can probably visible.
Digital sound are no have limitation. Making a mathematical model of an analog synth is probably very hard and need very cpu power.

To answer your question directly, the synth lead in the last slot, the Arancione2 sounds to me to be possibly the Serum2… but that’s only because the other three samples sound almost identical to each other… I’m sure I’m incorrect however 😅

Would have also liked to see FF Twin3 in here. It’s way underrated for virtual analog sounds

Hey man, any updates on which is which and what people said? Will there be a video in the future?

So, my guess is that Serum is either Verde or Rosso for the bass (leaning towards Rosso)
Either Violetto2 or Rosa2 for the Lead (leaning towards Violetto)
I did not like Blu and Arrancione2 at all - and I think Azuro2 is Pigments because of the filter slope?

If I'm totally wrong, I blame it on the 2 glasses of wine. Really curios nonetheless.

Hasn’t it been proven already time and again that all of the popular VST synths can accurately and effectively sound as decent as an analogue synth? Of course Serum and all others sound “cold and plastic” but I’ve seen channels compare digital to analogue in a mix, and it was indistinguishable from each other. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'll saaay... Red for the bass, Teal for the Lead. But I'm kinda shooting blind here 😅

I'd have added Avenger to the list.

My 2 cents;-) I just bought Serum 2 (coming from Vital) and Diva (using Surge XT). I have been quite disappointed by Serum 1/2 factory presets, and enjoyed the analog feel of Diva’s factory presets… i am a presets user not a sound designer and would appreciate finding a preset bank for Serum demoing those analogs capabilities :-)

As far as I am concerned, YouTube pipes the sound in digital. So... I do not particularly hear a difference myself. 🤔

Serum 2 is great at what it does. I have Arturia collection if I want VA.

Cant tell the difference.
However I can see and hear some changes to U-He's Tyrell no6 rerelease (still in Beta)
It definitely runs better on my old cpu, sounds like an old analogue synth and best its free

I would rephrase that 'is serum 2 really that bad ass virual analog' Yes it is and it's more. Serum is a swiss army knive capable of very big range of sound. Serum 2 expanded on that but Serum never lacked on de VA department to begin with. It does what you do and if you need VA experience you need to setup for it. It's neutral but fully equiped to set it up right (drift, tuning, saturation, intermodulation and so on) I think setting up a synth for one trick would be limiting and like I said Steve put in all you need for proper VA sound.

What would you possibly sound like analog synths? They sound horrible 🤣
