Mexican War of Independence: Mexico Readies Military Parade to Mark 210th Anniversary

Mexico's armed forces practiced Monday for the annual military parade marking the 210th anniversary of the country's 1821 independence from Spain.

The parade will take place Thursday without the usual crowds of thousands that line the parade route in keeping with social distancing and restrictions to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

"To participate in this parade ,in the situation the world is going through, it's a bit to remind Mexico that we are here, that we'll be here for them," said, aviator Miriam Martinez, a pilot on an all-female aircraft crew preparing to participate in the event.

Although Mexico's Air Force has had female pilots in their ranks since 2007, this will be the first time an all-female crew will fly in the country's Independence military parade.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is expected to present awards to both military and civilian doctors, nurses, and health workers, for their work during the pandemic.

This year's parade will count with the participation of just 671 members of the Mexican Armed Forces and the National Guard in sart contrast to last year's total of 12,000 participants.
