Finding South with the Southern Cross

It's amazing to see the Southern Cross I live in the Northern Hemisphere we have Polaris, but in general the stars in the Southern Hemisphere are amazing.

Even if you can't get exactly due South, you should still be able to get a fairly good idea from the way the cross is pointing.

We do have a south star called polaris Australis, just not very bright, but it is the closest star to centre.

I lived in Christchurch 10 years ago and as a muslim, I used to find south by this method to work out the direction of mecca. Now I'm back in South East Asia and don't know how to read the stars anymore 😅

Close to being correct, but you never run that final line down to the horizon

Where the 2 lines meet in the sky, that’s due south

If you run the line to the horizon, it’ll throw you off course, and you’ll unintentionally lock onto a cloud on the horizon or a mountain peak etc etc, which will throw you out of whack

I bet you were having trouble during these last days. Southern Cross overhead pointing different direction after 30 minutes (I was indoors.) The Earth has been swivelling, due to the Solar Coronal Mass Ejections hitting Earth. It makes for an interesting evening Star Gazing.
