That's what we did in Professor John McMullen's Old English class at the University of Houston

He was a great teacher from whom I learned so much!

I also suggest creating a YouTube playlist, and trawl through YouTube for as many videos and content in Old English as you can find and add them to the playlist.

This is what I do, I listen to random songs and poems in Old English on a loop for about an hour a day. This has greatly helped my pronunciation and is helping me with syntax and so on. It's difficult finding someone to talk with who speaks Old English so this is the next best thing to hearing a conversation.

I also have a friend and we record ourselves speaking Old English and we have conversations that way, which is reeeeallly helpful if you want to genuinely speak the language and develop the ability to think in it.

I'm still a very long way off fluency, but the puzzle that is Old English is halfway to completion in my mind now, and the more I learn the easier and easier it gets and the puzzle becomes clearer and clearer.

Don't give up, it is possible to do it, you can do it.

English has some remnants of inflection, like “whom, ” and the possessive “ ‘s “.

The late 19th century / early 20th century grammar books can be a bit hard going if you're not familiar with some of the base concepts etc. These tend to assume a lot as back when they were written most picking them up would be familiar with cases etc from learning Latin and possibly Ancient Greek already. Anyone who struggles with these early on would probably benefit from reading a more modern introductory guide.

I appreciate your answer to this question. This is pretty much how I learned hebrew and how i am learning syriac. There was no magic trick. Just looked up every word till I didn't need to look up words any more. It's rough going but you can get reading fluency this way.

This is the most tedious and inefficient way imaginable to learn to speak a language! It is an acceptable way to learn to read texts, and that's about it. A vastly superior way to actually learn to speak Old English is to get a time travel app and go back and learn it in person in King Alfred's court.

Make more videos in eald englisc but with modern englisc subtitles or even the reverse, just add old englisch as subtitles

Most people want to learn Old English not to speak but to read for obvious reasons!

Beowulf for example

All modern translations are lacking

They do not convey the earthiness nor the power of the language
