Yall are soo brave to hitchhike. I'm from California and we are taught never to pick up a hitchhiker or hitchhick ourselves less we be murdered. Lots of serial killer tramau still in living memory here. Glad you guys are safe and made it to the start. Can't wait to see your adventure unfold.

You're very brave to hitchhike, even as a couple. There are plenty of stories of couples who were picked up by people with nefarious intentions, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to hold your pepper spray (assuming you have some) in your hand (or have it VERY accessible) while in anyone's vehicle who you don't know! Safe travels!

I fantasize for years about doing the Pacific Crest Trail. Never got in shape enough for it. I do enjoy books and videos like this one that virtually take us along.

Technically Mt. Whitney is the highest point in the contiguous US, the highest point in the US as a whole is Denali in Alaska.
