In the kid friendly version, Squidward just randomly ends up in the kitchen

Maybe I’m going crazy but I remember watching this scene on TV when it first came out

Watching this again, there was no need or reason to remove this part. It’s at the same level as a Looney Tunes cartoon when you see Daffy Duck going through the same treatment when he gets shot by Elmer Fudd.

I had one of the most strangest Mandela effect moments with this episode as a kid. I always thought there was a extended scene with Squidward running through the Krusty Krab triggering all the booby traps which explains why he looked burned when he reached the kitchen.

My theory is to why this got taken out of the episode is probably cause that it showed kids that gas is flammable and they could replicate it from the show in real life

In the changed version, Squidward just goes straight to the kitchen. The unfortunate thing about making that change is that his remark about exploding becomes extremely random, when he hadn't experienced any explosions in that episode up to that point. The loss of context makes that joke less funny.
