Do Americans Have the Right to Donate Privately?

Keeping donations private protects religious liberty, advances the common good, and allows for a diversity of ideas. The freedom to give privately is one reason why Americans have been among the world’s most charitable donors.

But in March 2012, California set out to change all that—ordering all nonprofits that want to fundraise in the state to provide all of their major supporters' information.

The government shouldn’t be in the business of tracking and publicizing anyone’s charitable giving. Every American is free to support the causes they believe in—without fear of harassment or punishment.

Looks like Charities are about to get a rude wake up call.

Thankfully, I think the Supreme Court will reaffirm their correct decision protecting the rights of donors to the NAACP and every other private organization.

It's like all these videos love to turn on their own message. Was the best example you had about not restricting people really based on a man wanting to restrict other people from getting married?

Well, this makes little sense.
California doesn't even like publishing their Known Annual Abortion statistics.
There are multiple years, where California actually just refuses to release/report on the Abortions that they keep track of.... and we know that they don't keep track of those very well. ( _And that's ignoring the clear fact that California doesn't actually acknowledge/know about, all the abortions that happen in the state on a yearly basis._ )

2:54 - Brendan Eich was not fired or "forced", he left on his own accord. (And, considering Firefox is a lgbtq+ supportive company, they would not let a homophobe be a CEO for long)
3:01 - Proposition 8 was ruled unconstitutional by federal courts and was overturned in August 2010, because it violated both the Due Process and Equal Protecttion clauses of the constitution.

I agree that small donor's information should stay private, but leaving out information in examples just to prove your point shows that you don't think people will agree if you give the whole story. It's one of the first rules in opinionated essay writing; Leave no holes in the information given. In regards to the topic of the video, California state only requires a copy of charities' tax forms, which they file with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, which only lists major donors, excluding larger charities, who have to disclose donors who give more than $200, 000 annually. This is done to prevent charitable fraud, which is not only illegal but also just downright horrible. ( If you did not know, charitable fraud is when charities don't use their donor's money for what they say they'll use it for, or when groups pose as charities to gain donated money)

I think enforcing heterosexual marriage is stupid, but the freedom to be stupid is the most important freedom.

I understand the desire to police people's charitable donations to prevent tax fraud and other financial abuses (including the organization itself misusing funds)-

but there are other ways to monitor this. Giving large donors a donor I.D., tied to their identity, which can reveal their identity to investigators IN THE EVENT that it is required is better. Smarter folk than myself can think of even better ideas, I'm sure.

Part of me wants to say that folk should be able to put their mouth where their money is, but I understand things aren't always that simple.

How can this cartoon have gotten over a million views? It's a mess. It mixes up disclosure of campaign contributions with donations to nonprofits. And it falsely implies that the NAACP case stands for the proposition that donors never have to be disclosed to the government. In fact, all non-profits of a certain size disclose their major donors to the IRS annually.
