Good summary. I learded this via modular, which isolates each concept into actual components. I tend to really like synths where these components are clear and work from left to right. Dreamsynth and PS-20 are good, simple examples if this.

you think we should start referring to oscillators as generators? i noticed that is becoming more and more common with the modern soft synth workflow. i dont think its a big deal or anything, it just seems like modern soft synths giving you the option of wave table and granular and sample, in addition to basic waveshapes and other weird stuff sometimes all in one synth might make the "default word" for "thing that make noise" be different in the future. will have to wait and see i suppose
