Tony Banks - A Chord Too Far - Poppet

Happy Thanksgiving to all you Banksians in the U.S. today! I bring you this month "Poppet" which was an unreleased track Tony unearthed for 'A Chord Too Far'. Tony has stated, "Poppet was a left over from Still which I kind of had forgotten. I rediscovered it when I went through the stuff for this record. It’s quite nice and a good moment to use it. It sounds a bit like a backing track and lacks a vocal on it but I can’t really remember." Enjoy!

I fell in love with this piece when I heard it on Spotify. It's something fresh even in the Tony's style, it's nothing like any instrumental I had previously listened to. It sounds like keyboards of that time (1991) as I believe I recognize certain Korg timbres common on that period. I'd like to compare it with his Wicked Lady takes of 1983, but with the difference that this sounds like a demo of something you'd like to orchestrate that way for a movie (instead of a solo arrangement, different from the actual soundtrack), but still I like how it sounds on keyboards and I'd prefer this to any orchestra take (It's Tony Banks after all).
I love the lovely atmosphere Tony creates with all his orchestra synths, but I think that waltz-rhythmed accordion is one of the best elements of the arrangement. It creates to me images of France, or the snow, or something lovely in the air where people are happy, at least in appareance.

This sounds like it could have been used in a video game, something for the SNES. It'd have been right at home in Link to the Past or Final Fantasy 6.

Resembles some Ant Phillips, 'Slow Dance' in a couple parts. This is really quite enjoyable and from one of my all time favorite keyboardist
