Genesis (and really Tony Banks) are the kings of the pedal tones. To understand the concept, look for a video where Tony is explaining how Supper’s Ready is composed. The whole organ solo is him playing all sorts of major and minor triads over an E in the bass. Pedal tones are awesome because they create such tension (Bach’s go to!). Hope this helps everyone understand! Great video! Genesis is my absolute favorite as well!

Those guys created the most amazing music ever. I am 65 and a fan from 1974, when I started to listen to all their albums from Tresspass and on.

Those chords evoke an unresolved texture...key to getting a dramatic conclusion, that never concludes. Very emotional.

Oh my goodness I can’t believe someone actually went through song by song and found them all. This video is literally exactly what I was looking for. Thank you🙏🙏🙏

A typo on my part, 2:57 should say Gmaj7sus2

Additionally, Where The Streets Have No Name should not have been included as it merely features a standard Sus2 chord.

Also a couple tracks I missed that should be in this video:

- Get em out by Friday (interlude)

-Squonk (outro)

- Blood on the Rooftops (another one in the verse, and two more in the post-verse interlude)

- Follow you Follow me

- Open Door

That's awesome! I never knew there was a mystical chord. It helps me better understand why I like Genesis' music so much. I've been a fan of them since '76. Thank you!

Listening to Genesis using that chord basically gave me non-stop chills the entire time.

I remember getting into Genesis as a teenager and only stopping at Wind and Wuthering because that was the last album Hackett was on. I refused to listen to any of their non-progressive rock tracks. Then over the years, I started hearing their later songs on the radio and I realized: while their songs were indeed shorter and poppier, a lot of them, especially the darker sounding ones, still retained a lot of the same atmosphere from even the Gabriel days. I've been missing out after all of these years.

One notable section you missed was in Blood On The Rooftops. In both verse sections, the brief instrumental link in between each stanza contains two maj7sus2 chords in two different keys -- Dbmaj7sus2 and Ebmaj7sus2.

Hackett was quite a fan of this chord as well -- he often used it as a transitional chord, as he does at the end of the verses in Cuckoo Cocoon, or just before the electric guitar solo in Hands of the Prietess part 2.

Always been my favorite chord. Makes sense it was used so much by my favorite band.

Possibly my favorite hit song from the '90s was "You Get What You Give" by the New Radicals, and the frequent use of the maj7sus2 chord is one of the reasons why.

Genesis' chord progressions (I mean in general, not just the use of this one specific chord type) are what separate them from the rest of the prog rock bands and, for me, make them stand out as the best. Tony Banks is just a genius.

Great vid.

‘Cross My Heart’ By Melody’s Echo Chamber makes good use of it too

You omitted FGTR when discussing the albums on which Genesis used this chord. I'm not 100% sure, but I *think* I hear it during the bridge section of Window ("High upon a golden crested wave she sits...")

Keith Emerson and Todd Rundgren were using Maj 9 no 3 chords long before Genesis. But they acknowledge Laura Nyro’s influence.

This is the video i was looking for and couldn't find for some reason, thanks!
Making compilations is hard, one always misses some (as i saw someone comment), and i can't wait for the solo career video, that should be insane, i had to make an spread sheet for my Genesis decades video and even then i failed lol

Anyways, what's up with Wind & Wuthering? I find it crazy that my favorite moments from We Can't Dance are the parts were this chord is featured lol
