What Was It Like When Medieval Commoners Met Royalty

Encounters with monarchs were not reserved for the rich and powerful alone, but did medieval peasants ever meet their lords? Surprisingly, they sometimes did.

"Commoners" denotes a large group of men and women who didn't have noble titles. This included everyone from wealthy merchants to peasants who struggled to make ends meet. Surviving records reveal that medieval monarchs had encounters with these commoners - though it's hard to get a sense of what exactly commoners thought of these meetings. Were they cynical, excited, or indifferent about them?

Imagine you're a young peasant girl, and the king asks: ''My fair, dost thou wish to be my sidewench ?''

I read once that during the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, Henry V fought on foot with his men, in a suit of armour with his heraldry clearly visible and a crown welded to his helmet. THAT is a leader.

Suggestion: How did etiquette start? Also, who came up with the idea of "proper" table manners?

Interestingly, medieval monarchs would often tour their kingdoms, staying in different villages, towns and castles along the way. They would meet the local people, perhaps bestowing them with gifts and hearing their complaints which they wished to be remedied.

Having your feet washed by royalty.
Pros: having a literal monarch clean your disgusting commoner feet, mad bragging rights.
Cons: you are literally and symbolically broke.

Austrian Emperor Franz Josef (1830-1916) still did the feet washing thing. As I recall, a certain number of poor men would be selected and the Emperor would wash their feet. According to the source I read, the washing was basically symbolic: before the Emperor touched them, someone would properly clean their feet. However, they would go away with some alms as well in return for participating. Another thing I read about Franz Josef: when he and his wife Elisabeth were crowned King and Queen of Hungary in 1867, from what I've read, wine was put in fountains in Budapest like in the example in the video.

Feet washing is also done in some churches on the appropriate holiday. I've seen a video here on Youtube where (IIRC) a bishop or abbott in an Orthodox church or monastery maybe in Russia or somewhere washes the feet of some monks or priests. It was rather disappointing as he only quickly touched their feet - I think he didn't even wash both feet but only one on each guy.

I always sleep best after watching a weird history video. Especially during the past few years, your channel has been a very welcome distraction.
