Why can't people understand that the screen has an extra layer of PROTECTION THAT YOU CAN PULL OFF IF IT GET'S SCRATCHED.

The screen itself is scratch resistant, but it easily cracks without a protective layer.

As an example: Sony market the Xperia Z1 as a multimedia phone; if you were to watch videos on it with a friend (perhaps whilst on a car or train journey), the Z1's lacklustre viewing angles would distort the video footage and thus offer a poor multimedia experience, a counterpoint to a key aspect of the device. Both devices feature the same resolution (Full HD), but the Xperia Z1 utilises a 5-inch screen, whilst the Xperia Z Ultra measures in at 6.44-inches. What's more, despite both being branded by Sony as featuring its TRILUMINOS screen technology, the Xperia Z1's screen is significantly weaker, similar to that of the Sony Xperia Z, whilst the Xperia Z Ultra's display is simply stunning.

With screens getting bigger, people view phones off angle to share content and when the phone is on a table top. Viewing angles aren't the most important element, but should be factored into a review.

We've held the two side by side. The Z1 is categorically inferior head-on. It's a fantastic phone, but the screen win goes to HTC.

For quality, we'd say the HTC One. The LG G2's screen is very immersive, better suited to movies. Ironically, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is also a contender.

yup i have the Xperia L, P and Z, I dont have any problems dealing with the viewing angle, I think its a privacy feature because when you compare their tablets and their portable multimedia device(Walkman Z) which were built solely for multimedia and entertainment functions have good viewing angles

ar87ace Go into settings and uncheck the 'adapt to lighting conditions' box under Settings>Display>Brightness. Then it will really be bright

Be aware of Z1 camera reviews using pre-production model with early firmware. They all say picture quality isn't that good, which isn't accurate at all. Don't listen to them. Latest firmware makes a huge difference. With retail model and latest firmware, Z1 camera picture quality is superb!!

I have my Xperia Z and I DON'T GET IT WHY SOMEONE IN SOME REVIEWS SAYS IT HAS A WASHED OIT SCREEN. WHEN IN FACT I DON'T THINK IT IS. It's an lcd display. it's just showing the most accurate colors. and if you want a saturated version of the z1's colors. there might be a screen white balance which adjusts the screen's saturation up to your taste. just like my z

Thanks for the logical reply with no rose-tinted glasses being put on! I really love this phone and planning to get one when its to be released in my country but no matter how you slice it, a bad display is bad. I wonder why Sony able to put one of the best display on Xperia ZU and yet, regressed back to a crappy display when it comes to the latest flagship phone.

sony did once made an oled walkman at '09. which is pretty decent any viewing angles the colour will still remain. what happen now i really got no idea.

I don't think its the actual screen scratching its the shatter proof protector, would probably advise a screen protector over the top, just a thought !

No. It has a weaker camera, build and in our opinion, interface. It does have a better screen though.
