Ryobi P4001 Drain Auger Cable Replacement

How to replace the cable in your ryobi drain auger model p4001. I have used this drain cleaner a ton and love it for cleaning bathtub drains if you go through the overflow. Unfortunately, I kinked the cable bad and was stuck with a tool that was useless. So I took it apart to figure out how to replace the cable with a 1/4" Milwaukee drain cable.

Love it when “non-repairable” gets proven wrong. Not only saving money most times, but one less thing in the landfill. Kudos, my man!

Thank you. I was able to replace my cable I linked using your video. The detail of the 2 locking pins is what I needed. Piece of cake!

Thank you so much!! after getting kinked while i was snaking, the cable must have got even more kinked inside the drum when i retracted it. i was only able to extend it about 2 feet and it just wouldnt budge (luckily i'd already cleared the clog at this point :D).
it would retract fully, but never extend any further. i took it apart and opened up the drum and luckily the cable wasnt damaged so i was able to take it all the way out, then feed it back to the drum and put it all back together by following your exact instructions.

i spent the most time trying to get the cover back on because i just couldnt get it to line up right, and i was knocking the reverse/forward button out of place, and so had to make sure i set that properly. i used some foam pieces on the wood blocks to help keep things in place because it was sliding a bit on the wood blocks.

eventually i managed to get it done and now its working again! i used some torx t-10 2-inch bits in my little electric Skil driver, which made the job go a bit quicker. Cheers!

This was amazing! I borrowed my neighbors tool and the "auto feed" button would not "lock" so I took it all apart, fixed the spring and, boom, fixed! Awesome video.

Followed these steps, absolutely fine. No need for the blocks, though. I did all this on a workbench and could sit the auger level without even trying. Shame the replacement cable is about half the price of the complete unit sans battery. The only troublesome bit was finding the spring after I first put it back and it pinged out - my bad! Great video for what is basically a worst case scenario. Highly recommended.

The really good thing about this video is that it shows very clearly how the parts fit together. It appears that this model is no longer available at places like the Home Depot, so fixing it was definitely worthwhile.

Thank you for the video. I tore it apart and realized I did not know the position of the black plastic parts at 2:55. Should have looked at your video before I started and things would have gone much faster.

mine just jammed up. The P4002/P4003 have replaceable drums, I thought this one did but looking it over I couldn't see how it would be. yes, not really user replaceable but this method looks simple enough, thanks for posting!

Your rental units look like mines. Thank you for this video, I have to replace the cables on both mines and my father's.

Great video. You think i could stick a 50' replacement cable in there? And how do you keep it so clean? Mine looks brown, gray and black.

Is there a thin plastic rod inside the Ryobi cable? I used ours to snake a tub and now there is a plastic rod sticking out about three inches auger end of the cable. I thought maybe it was some type of reinforcement for the cable.

when is kinked(bended) you can straighten out? I want to get one from HD. My bathroom tube is slowly draining.. The manual snake sucks, my hand and arm are dead tired after 10 turns lol. THanks bro!

So does that mean you can turn the cheapy into one that can change bits?

Great video, thanks. So is the cable actually attached to anything inside the drum? Or is it just the bulb that stops it from coming out?

I just took the 3 end bearings off and the old cable came out, didnt have to take it apart.
