The BEST Sugar Alternatives for Hashimoto's

Sugar alternatives are supposed to be safe and healthy low-calorie options that can be used in place of refined and processed sugar.

Their great appeal is that they allow you to eat sweet things without gaining weight. But they don't actually work as well as you might think.

Before we get into that, though, here are the best natural sugar alternatives for patients with Hashimoto's:

1. Monk fruit
2. Allulose
3. Stevia
4. Sugar alcohols

But here's why I don't recommend them:
1. They are all heavily processed.
2. They aren't considered real food.
3. They aren't side effect-free.
4. And they aren't the miracle weight loss treatment you think they are.

Instead, I recommend forgoing the natural options and using natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup.

If you aren't willing to accept the calories associated with these sweeteners, they you shouldn't eat their low-calorie alternatives because it will just make you crave more sweets in the future.

I don't know that you ever answer questions, but I will try this time. I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia as a child when I failed a take home diabetes test I got from school. I did a glucose tolerance test. My doctor told me it was severe, and I would be a diabetic by forty. I went on artificial sweeteners immediately. I am still hypoglycemic at 65. Not diabetic. I do not tolerate sugar well. I crash. But, I do use artificial sweetener every day, mostly in my iced tea. I do sprinkle a little on my strawberries. I went off artificial sweeteners for six months several years ago and noticed no changes in my body at all. My sister loves sweets and eating in general. She became diabetic in her late 40s. I feel like the artificial sweeteners saved me. They are not a gateway drug to make me crave sugar more. I did lose my gallbladder, and lost my thyroid soon after. But that is totally genetic. I had a great grandmother who died many, many years ago who had a goiter sitting on her chest. My grandfather and mother died young, as she did, in their fifties. All of these theories scare me to death. When I listen to everyone, it feels like I should live on water only. I do not believe that honey is better for me. Anything with sugar causes me to crash. Even sugar free Gatorade has artificial sweeteners. What should a person like me drink?

I am not going to use sugar, or sugar alternitives any longer. I can't see the need for them.

In my view, the best thing to do is reduce the sweetness of your diet. Whether that is "natural" or some other sugar-like substance or an artificial sweetener.

Get used to less sweet food. Enjoy savoury foods for their own sake.

Despite my utter hypocrisy in that I do consume foods that contain sugar.

Plus maple syrup tastes and smells delicious compared to Spenda which smells vile! What about agave syrup ?

Thank you for knowledge.
Please speak about urine test for T3, T4 . Sometimes the problem is visible only in urine test, not in the blood test.

I use agave nectar for a sweetener. It tastes great without the weird aftertaste.

What do you think about the AIP diet? It excludes all of these sugar replacements. They do however allow honey, maple syrup and coconut sugar.

I noticed it's hars to do a 180 deg change over night. So stevia sweetened otherwise hralthy things with otherwise healthy diet could help go that right direction, when transition a diet.

I have sweet tooth. I need the sweet taste daily. I get depressed if I eat completely bland food 😢 I've already changed my diet a lot.

I removed my thyroid last year due to cancer. Does this mean hashimoto condition is gone now?

You say don't use them, other Dr's say allulose is the newest go to health sweetener. We keep Stevia, allulose, xylitol, honey, date sugar, but in all the confusion I have found cutting back on sweets and sugar intake is the simplest thing. I used to require 3-6 tsp of sugar to drink my wife's coffee. I have learned to get by with 1/2 tsp of pure cane sugar.
