This is one of those things that makes complete sense once its shown to me but I would have never thought of it myself

back in the 90s we didn't have youtube or tiktok, nor were tabs easily available. this is how we learned the songs we played when we were kids.

I’ve trained all my life as a musician primarily vocalist - I’m practically an expert at this - using relative pitch to find the harmonic progression - and thinking about how people listen to music and don’t automatically do this is crazy to me. Like forever I hear music differently. It’s be like if everytime a chef looked at food he clearly saw the ghost ingredients like floating above it knowing exactly what it took to make that dish. But this isn’t a special superpower about half of all trained musicians - and certainly almost every professional musician can identify a chord progression just by listening to 20 seconds of a song - the rest being all drummers LOL

That’s…so incredibly easy. I wish I saw this decades ago. It would have saved me so much confusion all these years!

Spending time with an instrument does great things for your ears. I know people who like making music but refuse to pick up anything even a MIDI keyboard and it really shows how much they struggle with writing anything that isn't made up of samples

That came natural for me when I was first learning. Back in Cuba we didn't have internet in 2007 when i was begining to learn and I discovered that. I was blown away

I like how you close your eyes to really feel the music

I remember it was one of the first things I did to learn a song when I started to play as a little kid. Never read chords on books to play a song. Now I have a perfect ear 😎

I learned this the hard way, by playing with musicians who knew it all already and were too cool to tell me what key we were in, so I had to figure it out on my own by ear. It sometimes took a few minutes, but now I can usually find the key pretty quickly.

I remember the tone of songs in my head, each one in a different key.

A = Classical Gas by Mason Williams
Bb = The highest note in Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
B = Baby Blue by Badfinger
C = Dust in the Wind by Kansas
C# = Come a Little Closer by Cage the Elephant
D = Sweet Home Alabama by Lyndard
Eb = Beat It by Michael Jackson
E = Peaceful Easy Feeling The Eagles
F = Shadows and Regrets by Yellowcard
F# - The second chord in The Feud by The Front Bottoms
G - Take it Easy by the Eagles
G# Second chord of Come a Little Closer by Cage the Elephant

If you can remember the exact pitch of the parts of these songs (or any other songs with those same chords) you basically have a kind of acquired perfect pitch.. you can cross reference all the notes in your head and determine the key of any song or sound or beep of a microwave. 😊 Edit: capitalizing Queen 👑

If you understand diatonic, you can quickly discern if the song is Major, minor, or melodic minor, Lidian etc.
(Every major key contains minor chords, and with a diminished, flattened, or natural seventh, and every minor key has major chords. This is called the keys Diatonic chords, and it can also make finding the notes really quick and easy.
For example... if the song is in the key of Cmajor, then I know every D, E, and A chord will be minor, and the B chord will be diminished.

The best way is to listen to the bass. That's what I've always tried to teach people everytime I want to improve their listening skills.

Hello i’m a malaysian and C-A is the most common 2 keys to every Malaysian Language songs, used for years (in my time, 30 years of listening to music). If you’re not familiar with Malaysian Language, that C-A also being used widely by the Cranberries and other ballads like Michael Learns To Rock
