This may be destroying your flute playing…

I have seen this destroy SO many students playing. It can be so subtle and often undetected but wreak havoc on our tone, fingers, articulation and so much more…

And it’s so basic. If you have been doing our 14-day breathing challenge, you will know by now the value of taking a free open breath. Artificially lifting the shoulders, even just slightly, instantly prevents that full open breath.

Why?

Well, try it. Lift your shoulders up. Feel what happens to your belly.

It immediately gets sucked in. But, we really need it to be able to flop outward and open up to allow for a full breath.

Very unflattering…I know, but we need to let those beautiful bellies hang as the rest of our body expands and opens…Give it a try, quick, while no one is watching (only joking a little). Your body will be grateful and your tone even more so!

Finally a wind player who understands that the lungs do not fill and expel air from the belly because the lungs are not located or function from the belly 👍🏽. You might consider that it’s not the back so much as it is the lower, so called floating ribs on the sides is where the action is. Like a bellows 🙏🏽

I had a body mapping prof describe it as an "excursion of the lungs" that was helpful
