I have discovered a well by this 13th century castle manor has a secret passage at ground level that seems to lead into the castle to a secret room. But getting down the well to the passage to find out more will be dangerous. This video shows what can be seen with a camera lowered down the well to look inside. its a cistern viaduct -Used to collect water from roof rain shed-very common and probably disconnected years ago.

Not a well, but maybe a cistern . Cisterns are often built to catch and store rainwater. Cisterns are distinguished from wells by their waterproof linings. The tunnel is from where the rain and snow melt would have been funneled. We find cisterns in places where the water tables shift a lot, or it would be too difficult to reach the water table. Like a castle built on a rock mountain...where enemies could not tunnel in.

It's a drain for collecting rain water.

The "tunnel" is an overflow system that drains into a cistern..when there's more rain than the well can handle, it gets stored. A lot of old houses in Malta have this system. I wonder if your house suffers from damp and mildew?as it's very common when water is stored under the foundations.

Its an overflow for the well actually .. My Dads got a well inside his cottage and several capped wells in his Farmyard .. the one inside the cottage has the same arrangement that allowed any excess water to flow from the cottage into the cattle sheds .. clearly the cottage was built after the well was sunk as the Kitchen was built next to the well ..

It's a passage if you can walk through it. It's a ventilation shaft or perhaps a water conduit to a cistern because of its narrow size.

Looks way too small to be suitable for humans - could it be some ventilation shaft for cellar?

it is probably a roof draining channel - water from the roof comes down to fill up the well

It’s a Gallery. They were common in old wells, kind of a cistern.

I would not go in there without my Bullwhip, my Fedora and my Smith & Wesson 1917 revolver . I also hate the thought of snakes being in there.

Water collects from the roof and ends up down the secret passage into the well

I'm guessing the water would flow through to a cistern so they could pump water from indoors... But still really cool discovery IMO 👍👍

It was probably used to get water into the house. Instead of going outside every time. That would be my guess...

It's a sump for rain water. Pretty smart, actually. My guess is this home is built on a lower lying area that floods on occasion.

That's a trough to carry rainwater from the building into the well. Being that it's a shallow well by the look of it, under 200' in depth, you can't rely on it to stay full and abundant. I think the room you'd find at the end of the tunnel is most likely a cistern that would promote settlement and provide clean runoff from under the building where the perimeter drains will have emptied to.

If the tunnel is in slope could be a water drain toward the well. I've seen many of them here in Italy.

Alfred? What are you doing away from, Wayne Manor?

It's not a tunnel ahaha it's how they made air flow through the castle to cool during summer and heat during winter...
