I used to abrade a section of the "plastic" material quickly to create heat and would smell the classic smell of Bakelite. I made reproduction electronic parts from Bakelite when I was younger and the way parts of any kind was made was by pressing into the mold under heat. The Bakelite came in a coarse powder form in a one pound plastic bag out to 10 pounds. Regular modern plastic is so much easier to use.

Hey! Like the POW * MIA flag. My uncle is MIA in Budapest, I think in 1945. My father kept searching for his oldest brother Joseph 'til his death. He found MANY graves, even a memorial was founded, but he did not find his brother's grave. In our country there are few guys that care about POW/MIA, because if you care, publicity will most likeliy prejudge you as a nazi.

A q-tip with 409 cleaner works the best, if you rub the item with the Qtip and it shows the color of the item your testing on the Qtip then it's real. I've been dealing antiques for 15 years.

Be very (!) careful to expose bakelite to any fluids. It may get soaked because it contains fillers such as paper or sawdust. For example many P. 38 grips show small bumps due to moisture. So hot water might damage grips.

I can smell the Bakelite without heating it or running it under water. Maybe you don’t even have to go that far.

Great tip! Thank y'all. You do have to be care what fillers are used with bakelite. But if it has fillers they are fairly obvious visually.

I’m going to try that today on a pair of Vis35 grips I’m on the fence about.
