Theme from Chinatown - Trumpet Solo

After years of searching, I finally found a partial conductor's score for this piece; I always stumbled on the first chord when I was trying to write it out by ear (it's every note of an F Major scale if you're interested), and so I'd put it aside waiting for the next time I'd give it a go. I've finally scored and arranged it to play along with.

The score to the movie Chinatown written by Jerry Goldsmith is a famous one. He is said to have written it in just two short weeks, and waited for the lead trumpeter for the MGM orchestra, Uan Rasey, to return from holidays to record it. It's gone down in history as one of the great movie themes, and many trumpet players, including myself, consider Uan's recording a masterclass in trumpet phrasing and sound.

I orchestrated, arranged and programmed the backing track, and shot and recorded this in my mini studio. I hope you enjoy it, lot's of things I hear in it to work on in 2020!

Recorded in Logic x using the BBC Symphony by Spitfire Audio (with the exception of the piano).

Listening to this, I am sure Uan was looking down smiling and saying, "bravo well done"!

What a beautiful play! Wish you can post more solo play video, your technique is world class.

Excelente! A true tribute to those all unknown trumpet heroes at the commercial studios. In this case, the great Uan R.

Dear all; unfortunately for those asking, I cannot share the backing that I made. All of my videos have copyright claims against them as I (obviously) didn't write the original, and so I would be getting into hot water making them available.

Such a beautiful solo of my favorite piece for trumpet.❤️ I also adore how you roll the film’s intro during……👌❤️💋
You make (one of the most difficult instruments), look easy.

Nice. I got to study with Uan but he never picked up his horn. He wasn't particularly fond of this. He told me he had just comeback from vacation and got to the studio early to get the 3rd book, we know the rest

Great tone production, excellent fundamentals as a trumpet player, IMHO.

I tried getting my hand on a trumpet only (or main like this) version for a while - actually after watching an episode of the Simpson’s - congrats on the take !

Adrian - One of my favorite pieces of all time, I'm a Bass Trombone player up in Newcastle, you sound so much like Uan, real soul in your sound, I like to dabble myself but obviously George Roberts inspired of course. Can I be cheeky and ask if you would be willing to share this back track with me as I'd love to just play along to this, I know this is from Trumpet but would be nice to have around for a blow. Brilliant work, hats off to you. Al

absolutely fantastic arranging, solo, everything. Note on the audio engineering, do you mind a constructive note? just fade back a little on the solo, so it has that haunting, ethereal sound

Great work man! Chinatown is one of my favorite movies and i’d love to play this on my trumpet. Is there any chance you could provide me with the notes so that i also can play it?

Did you use a King Silver Flair Trumpet just like Uan Rasey in the original solo? The sound is so similar although I know you are playing it on your own.
