Explore the question of the Fermi paradox: Given a few reasonable assumptions about the chance of life arising elsewhere in the universe and the distances between the stars, why haven’t we uncovered another civilization?
-
Season Four of Cosmic Vistas zooms in to focus on some familiar solar bodies within our reach. How well do we really know our celestial neighbours such as Saturn and Mars? What do we have yet to learn? With the help of satellite technology and the incredible shuttles that put them into orbit, many questions about our solar system's past and future are finally being answered by science.

I absolutely love watching documentaries like this. Great work.
There are so many things we yet need to learn about the universe to truly answer Where are the Aliens? Least of which is space travel.

Keep up the great work.

One additional thought: The more sophisticated our signalling technologies get, specifically the algorithms we use to encode those signals on radio waves, the closer they are to white noise. The possibility exists that civilizations significantly more advanced than our own might just have radio frequency modulation schemes so complicated that they are (to us) indistinguishable from background noise, and encryption only makes it worse.

Just like there could be a “great filter” that removes technological species, there could also be a “great achievement” that jumps a species to a technology so outside our conception that they are effectively invisible to us and we are insignificant to them.

Love these Cosmic Vistas short documentaries. Ivan is a class presenter too, keep them coming and thanks for your great work!

Crazy field, on the one hand you have fighter pilots swearing they're are video taping alien air crafts in our atmosphere, on the other, you have skeptical physicists questioning why we have not detected any alien presence, yet in the cosmos.

Radio communication is declining as more information is streamed online, and will possibly almost disappear as we change the technology we use for long distance communication. The same is likely true for othe civilizations meaning a mere 200 year timespan for detection of those signals. Compared to the age of the universe, even thousands of intelligent civilizations radio emissions would be difficult to detect, fleeting bubbles of emission...

"mastery of our planet" Yeah sure pal, it's your story. Arrogance will be our downfall.

I'm curious as to how old this doc actually is. Gotta be at least 10 years. From my perspective (I try to keep up on the latest scientific periodicals fresh off the minds of the leading researchers of various fields) approx 50% or more of the information in this doc is either incorrect, or has been modified since due to updates and new discoveries. In any case, it is just possible even probable that EACH planet is a unique, one of a kind ball of chemistry, activity, and gravitational, electromagnetic complexes. Each having incredibly sophisticated, interwoven, complex activity and interactions with its local celestial neighbours, and equally unique one of a kind star. What this means, is that organic biological life as we have it here on Earth, might very well be that particular singular attribute unique and in effect ONLY on this planet, because of a combination of elements and forces which have occurred here. Much like finger prints and DNA, or snowflakes. The planets are certainly analogues of living organisms in the sense they have a birth, life and death, and are very much active, each very unique and EXTREMELY complex, even though we do not see it from our perspective and vantage point. I can't expound on this here, but I could, and there are a LOT of evidence and factors which support this idea. Or if there ARE other planets which have the right stuff, they may be SUPER rare. I've been saying this for years - That We NEED to figure out in detail and for certain, exactly HOW life formed on Earth. Our science doesn't really know. It has some good working hypothesis but nothing in the way of a solid certainty. There are currently some radical new ideas due to advances in technology and new research. It also supports the unique Biological Earth probability. If we find out how life actually formed here - If it did, as opposed to interstellar panspermia -We would then be in a very good position to answer the question of life existing on other worlds. We really know so little about THIS world.

Maybe we're the most advanced civilization and others are hundreds if not thousands of years behind us. Gives a new perspective on our responsibility to ourselves and potentially other younger civilizations to figure out our big problems so we can help "little sibling" out if or when we find them.

I think we only see them if they allow us to see them. Just my opinion.

Considering our world view changes from generation to generation, it's very likely that we don't have a true understanding of our universe or our place in it, the idea of "Space" won't last forever, unless you're one of those that thinks science remains the same all the time and never changes.

If indeed there are other civilizations that have figured out the distance problem, and can travel at faster than light speeds, I would think they also figured out a way to jam any signals so they remain unknown. I doubt they would want to be noticed as they, unlike us, are aware there is other life in the universe, possible aggressive life, also like us! 😀👍✌

in Indian Vedas are reported stories about ancient civilizations who used advanced technologies as flying machines, Vedas say that each 12000 years there is a peak in human civilization and then fades away in the next 12000 each cycle is around 24000 years. This means that many civilizations advanced civilizations walked on earth and now we dont know about them

If I recall Carl Sagan stated in his TV series COSMOS, he did believe there are others out there but the distances are to great. I hope he his wrong.

The problem is we imagine and assume that life has to be similar and familiar to us as we know it on earth - thus we look for prerequisite factors such as habitable zone, water presence, atmosphere etc. What if alien life exists and is completely alien to us and our vision of life? Their home world/planet doesn't have to be pleasant for us humans, does it?

Extremely rare, but not uncommon, in other words!
