How to Remove the Governor on a Go Kart Engine (BRONDA Part 1)

How to remove a small engine governor, step by step walk through. This outlines the process for virtually all small engines (predator, briggs, honda, etc). Even though your engine might be a little different, the governor system is similar across brands.

I'm pretty sure the valves didn't fall out, unless you took the cylinder head off and removed the valve springs. What probably fell out were the lifters (they look a lot like valves). What you are going to need to do is turn the engine upside down so gravity holds the lifters in place, then put the camshaft back on (there is a spot for it in the engine block. rotate the camshaft and camshaft gear (making sure that the woodruff key is in place) so that the dots line up.

You will also either need to take the governor arm out, or grind down the little flap of metal so that it wont hit the gears inside.  Dont worry if stuff falls apart, it will all fit back together :-) Just keep it clean in there.

 Also, to reiterate, you will need to change the way you have your throttle set up once the governor is removed (the governor allows easier starting, as well as governs max rpm). When starting your engine with the governor removed, you still use the choke, but you need to manually hold open the throttle until it starts/warms up. You'll get it eventually, just do a little head scratching.

So, , is it necessary to pull engine apart to remove gear and any other governor parts? Can't I just disconnect it from the throttle Linkage and put Linkage for my throttle cable? Only asking because
I have done this on brigg and stratton engines many times and it seem to work fine.

Just attempted this and 1/4 inch bolt wouldnt fit. Same motor. Wierd. That 1/4 inch is now stuck and probably gunna put a lock nut on and leave it. Its winter so it'll sit until i get it in running order to see if its gunna shoot it out or if i need to find some new size bolt

What do you mean you need a new throttle assembly when you remove the governor? I have a really old 8hp briggs maybe a 1980. Are the exhaust valve spring usually read on them ?

i bought one of these from my local junkyard for my mini bike sadly shes a goner the cylinder walls are damaged bad and i dont know if i can have it machined but i decided to use it for parts untill i can take it to a machine shop

What if you just removed the govenor arm and linkage from the carburetor but left the internals in place. I know it may not be right, but would it work?

Why does my carburetor stay on full throttle after engine turns on? Obviously I’m not a mechanic, just a guy trying to fix his sons gokart, ..gokart runs great when I use my finger to carburetor throttle, once I hook it ip to throttle assembly with Governor it stays full throttle..any input woukd be greatly appreciated, thank you

Hey I removed the governor on my early 70s Briggs and Stratton mini bike motor I think its like 3 HP. Now once we put everything back together it won't pull. We didn't take the arm out and we didn't line up the dots but we also had the valves fall out when we removed the cover because the can shaft came with it. Help?
