I know this is an older video but I am new to fly tying and fishing. I used this pattern yesterday and caught my first fish on a fly that I tied. Thanks !!

Awesome video. x2 to showing the live scud. I just read in a fly tying book that the orange center represents a pregnant scud. This must be why it works with or without it. Thanks again.

That’s a great pattern. Easy to come up with different variations and colors that I’m sure will be effective.

You have a amazing talent breaking these down and showing the materials that are used. Your voice and clear speaking just bring these videos together. I really appreciate the time you invest to make your practice at such a high level. The only thing I wish that the recipe for the fly could be included in the video description, generally I stop the video and do a screen shoot to get the material list.

The whip finish tool I use in the videos is made by Matatelli and is more than 20 years old. I ground the bottom edge of the tool into a cutting edge. It's not hard to do and it works very well.

For other backing materials, there is a product called scud backing (marketed by Wapsi I believe. I may be wrong though) and is very stretchy and durable. For smaller flies, you can cut the 1/8 strip into smaller strips. It works very well and comes in many colors
