In the 1840s and 1850s, the potato crops across Ireland failed. Whilst the blight affected Europe, it was the Irish Farmers who suffered most.

In this video, we will look at the way of life for many of the tenant farmers who were most affected, the response of the British Government and how people managed to survive.

This is a tale of profits before the starving but also of how people can come together in times of great suffering.

The Choctaw nation donating to Ireland during the famine reminds me of when a Masai tribe in Kenya gave 14 cows to US after 9/11. Such kindness in terrible times, their contributions will not be forgotten.

What I found heartwarming about this is the contribution from the people of the Choctaw nation. I remember a good friend of mine telling me about it and it reminds you not all is bad in the world.

The fact that Ireland and England are so close, yet the British thought they were subhuman apes really shows humans ability to divide ourselves.

My great grandmother was Choctaw, born in Choctaw Territory Oklahoma just a few years before it was given away to white settlers. She used to knit beautiful blankets, 100's of them, and send them wherever they were needed. ♡

My people have historically helped others to survive through the hardest of times. From teaching George Washington's troops about corn mash and flour to make bread to the people of Ireland during the famine. It's a shame we are treated so inhumanly so frequently.

I have a Choctaw ancestor who married an Irish settler. They moved to Texas by wagon so she didn't have to make that death march on the Trail of Tears. They had 3 sons who loved their native mother and Irish father very dearly. The family story is she was a very sweet woman. We couldn't find record of her native name. It's just listed as Susan and we think she was forced to change it when they got married by the registrar.

In Midleton, Cork in Ireland our country has a monument to remember the generosity of the Choctaw. It's called Kindred Spirits. It's 9 20ft high Eagle feathers, curved and arranged to form a bowl, representing the gift of food to the Irish during the famine. None of the feathers are the same and are made of steel

Growing up poor as dirt in Appalachia, my family of 5 ate solely potatoes all 3 meals for 2 months straight. Another time we ate solely gravy biscuits 3 months. My parents refused welfare, and always worked, but the rare jobs were very poor pay. Funnily enough, we're mostly Scot-Irish. I'm now in another state and thankful for my poor upbringing. It's made me appreciate the hell out of everything I've got. I've heard this story before, but this is the first time I've cried. Great, great upload. Thanks, Disturban.

I'm Irish, and one time in my Irish class, the topic of the famine came up (not sure why). The teacher pointed to a row of empty seats in the back of the room and said that if the famine never happened, then those seats would probably be full. Don't know why that in particular sticks with me but it does.

I have Irish ancestry and even years after the famine, after settling in their new country there still was a lot of interpersonal devastation. I've been told about the lots of tragic events that happened on the Irish side of my family, which could probably be attributed to what they faced a few generations prior.

Can we please stop calling it a "famine", there was adequate food, but the British shipped it all out of Ireland for their "empire", it was forced starvation.

I had never heard about the Native Americans donating etc. Thank you for sharing this - let’s pray it never happens again

One day I'd love to go to Oklahoma to actually meet others from the Choctaw Nation and travel to Ireland to see the Kindred Spirits sculpture. I have never gotten to connect with my Choctaw or Irish heritage, and that's some of the stuff I'd really love to do.

My ancestors on my mothers side came too the US from Ireland because of the famine. It's crazy how devastating it was to the people during that time, and how poor they were treated by those around them. Definitely something that's not talked about a lot, if ever. Great video💜

This would more accurately be called the *Great Irish Genocide/Poor Irish Genocide.*
