After 1200 vids and nearly 2k subs, you reach the point, "I just do this as a creative release, it makes me feel good!" and if people want to watch great, if not.... who cares? Just do it for your own pleasure first and foremost.

Great points! The first one is especially important for YouTubers just starting out: "Your family and friends don't care that you started a YouTube channel." Learned this lesson earlier this year. I got virtually zero support from friends & family on FB/Insta, and it was demoralizing for a while... UNTIL I had a couple videos go viral and then quickly realized, oh wait... THESE are my peeps! They *get it*.

Whether they're existing friends/fam or *new* friends/followers... it's ULTRA important to surround yourself with people who are supportive, encouraging, and generally interested in what you're doing/creating. They're *out there*... you just gotta put yourself out there until they finally see your stuff and connect with your content (and you). It feels great when it happens, but yeah... it can take a Just keep going!

Youtube is based on the universal principle that if you want to receive, you must give first, and not a little.

I love videos of YouTubers telling the truth and what they have learned on their journey.

You have a great way of putting together all the random thoughts jumbled in my 62 year brain and simplifying them in a concise way that's easy to understand. It took me 117 days and 17 videos to reach the magical 1000 subscriber mark this week and it's been eye opening. I still haven't nailed down a concrete niche and that's ok. I'm leaning into leaving my legacy for my family and hope to entertain a few people while doing so.

Virginia, I love your channel and have gotten a lot out of them. I can really relate to what you're saying. My best friend has supported my YouTube efforts from the very beginning. Even before I posted my first video. But other than him, nobody cares. I view YouTube as a business, but when you're 71 years old and you tell someone you're a YouTube Creator, it's like...."that's nice, it's good to have a hobby." I think i need to find some other creators to network with. Keep up the great work.

Great content and SO true. Those closest to you usually have no idea the work that goes into the doing of videos.
Thanks for always the solid content. I appreciate all the tips and insights.

Virginia! As a fellow former TV gal I found this video SO validating and refreshing. I’m right there with you in that I just assumed my TV experience would make my channel grow faster. Boy was I wrong. YouTube has humbled me in more ways than I could ever imagine. Thanks for speaking the truth and inspiring me to keep going even when I feel like my videos are getting no views!!

These are great tips!! I’m at 600 subs which is amazing and look forward to growing! I didn’t think you used your hands too much. You always seem very natural and relaxed.

We would post a photo of our listener in Studio. The person we were talking to. Another name trick. Before you talk on camera, ASK the question. The one you"re about to answer. "Virginia, who are you exactly, and why are you here?" "How do I get more Subs?" etc

Isn’t it ironic that this video about “nobody cares” is getting you your most views? Lmao!
As a fellow GenXer and first time viewer this got me watching more. Subbed and thanks!!

I'm just about to start my own channel and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this honest insight from an experienced youtuber & TV personality. Thank you!

Very true, strangely, just doing videos has got me hired by friends to help them with their marketing, an unexpected side gig not related to my business channel at all.

Virginia your videos helped me so much. Advice like
Yours got me FINALLY to 1000 subs. Now I’m just trying to get watch hours.
Oh and yes- I never bother saying ANYTHING about my channel to family and friends. They LITERALLY DO NOT CARE 😂😂

On one channel that I used to watch, viewers were addressed as Linda. It was hilarious because the creator wasn't speaking to someone named Linda but to a specific type of person. It made you pay attention and created that connection you're talking about. Another guy calls his viewers Greg, but again he's not talking to just Gregs, he almost makes it sound as if a Greg is some kind of creature.

I really enjoyed this video. I'm 46 and just starting a business meant to help writers (mainly self-publishers). It's very daunting, even though I too have a lot of knowledge and experience. I'm happy to see your channel is growing and I totally agree that we always need to think bigger, outside of ourselves. Helping others and building a community in which people have a good time and learn from one another is priceless.
I love your setup, too. I personally think it's very important to create a visually balanced background that doesn't distract from the content. You don't want people to get tired watching you. Everything works beautifully behind you and you fit in very well with that polished look and gorgeous blue top.
And yes, we do need to take the comments into account. Way too many creators get offended when their viewers make suggestions. You can't please everybody but some of the criticism may be valid and useful. People WILL click off just because you're too loud or you mumble too much, or you touch your hair all the time (I hate when people throw their hair around).
Side note: I love Brett Cooper's expresiveness, her personality is her brand, but when Daily Wire replaced her with someone who was copying her voice and gestures, it turned people off real quick. You gotta be authentic, first and foremost.

You and Rob the Maritimer were my biggest help in my starting my YouTube channel. My channel monetized after only 5 videos and it’s because of your valuable “how to” videos. This video is so good and the advice is right on. Love your channel.

Great points!! I don’t understand the whole “easy mode” phenomena. I’ve been doing YouTube for 4 years now and FINALLY got monetized this past year after treating my channel less as a hobby and more like a business. I make a vlog series about “life in my 40s”, not gonna lie, it’s a lot of hard work and can be very frustrating at times. Especially when you don’t see the views or growth the you want. My only advice is to keep learning and improving with each video.

I am trying to start a channel and I watched a ton of your videos. They are concise, organized and focused. I appreciate what you say. I liked you more when you showed yourself vulnerable as opposed to polished, beautiful and unreachable. Thank you
