Humpback whales are truly selfless and full of compassion (more than most humans are capable of), or else they would not have dared this rescue. We give these wondrous, sentient creatures too little credit for their bravery.

God, this breaks my heart.  I just saw Deep Blue where 2 killer whales attack a baby humpback that was clutching to its mother.  They kept trying to separate him from its mother for 6 hours and the baby was too exhausted to hold on.  I can't get over how terrifying it must be to be stalked and attacked like that for SIX HOURS.  and then the mother has to keep on her journey, alone.  I was sobbing.  I know it's just life and life can be brutal, but damn it's hard to watch.

humpbacks will always try to protect, sadly sometimes they may not complete there mission but they try there best. humpbacks will always be the guardian and it warms my heart to know they try, R.I.P baby humpback...

This is fascinating. Orcas terrorize other whales. I find it interesting to see the intervention of the Humpbacks...perhaps this means they are able to understand the Grey's distress call?

Wow... as heartbreaking as it was to witness the attack (and yes, I am aware, that's nature and la da da) it was truly beautiful and remarkable to see what the humpback whales did. And even more impressive that they stayed there for that long. Truly amazing.

I loved the part where the fin pokes out of the water but my favorite part was where the fin goes back in the water but then if comes out again. Crazy plot twist!

Put a camera under water, all it looks like to us is whales splashing around the surface.

That's sad. To think the humpbacks tried to save the baby, but failed.

There have been numerous recorded instances of whales attacking orcas who are hunting other species has been, and it's thought that they are not actually trying to save the other species so much, but that they instinctively respond to orcas acting aggressive because they are known to also attack humpback calfs, and it's in the whales best interest to make the orca leave the area.

fun fact: humpback whales are very friendly animals and are known as 'buddhist warriors' they always try and help other species like in this clip.

Dude, the fact that these amazing creatures exist makes me wonder about the deeper darker depths of the water. Imagine the crazy living things down there. Fascinating.

Humpbacks are frequently targeted and killed by Orca...

They knew the threat and also the risks... but went out of their way to try and help a totally different species to them.

Let that sink in.
