Marty always breaks it down so that it's doable. Thanks for the quick lesson on a classic riff!

Instead of playing the 5th fret on the D you can also play the open G string, that way it keeps ringing out during the rest of the riff.

For anyone who's interested to know what they're playing here it is:

E (Lowest octave on the guitar)
E (One octave up)
G (Same octave as the last E)
A# (Down to the original octave)
A (1/2 step down from the last note)
E (This is the same E that was an octave up from the original)

It always helps me to figure out exactly what I'm playing. Learning the notes of the fretboard allow you to take this same pattern and move it around on the guitar. If you haven't done it it's a lot easier than you think.

Interestingly enough the second E you play is the exact same note as if you played the twelfth fret on the low E string because the twelfth fret on each string is the same note as the string open but an octave higher. And the G played here is the exact same note as the open G string.

I don’t know why I watch these when I already know the riff

Holy s*** Marty is that a beautiful guitar! That color is just radical man. Beautiful!

This is actually incorrect. The riff is played with the pinky on the A string, the middle finger on the D string, then the 6-5 on the E string is played with the Ring and Index respectively. This is in order to let the 5th fret D string ring out.

It took 20 years for me to realize this. There is no reason that a beginner shouldn’t play it just like this tutorial shows, but if you’re wondering why it just doesn’t quite sound like the record, this is why.

Thats just the beginning. You gotta show the lead up and then the actual riff which is Open E then power Chord then A string 5th fret sliding down to 7th fret then back to E 6 and E 5 with the bending of the E 5 to make that cool sound 😁🤘

I absolutely love your teaching technique Marty! Following for a year now. This was the first Metal song I learnt playing and used the same fingering as you... But then I watched some live videos but looks like James uses the fourth finger for the high E and the second finger for the G... And third finger for Bb to get the tritone in the intro.

The correct way to play the intro is a more advanced chord shape so it’s nice that Marty is keeping this beginner friendly. Only thing is when I was a beginner I could hear it sounding off compared to the original and it’s because you’re supposed to sustain your A and D strings

To make it easier do
Open on (L)E use your pinky on 7th threat D index finger on 5th threat A and use ring finger 6th threat(L)E and middle finger 5th threat (L)E
That way you can keep all fingers on

I put my pinky on the 7th fret A string, index on the 5th fret D string then use my ring for the 6th fret E string then middle on the 5th fret E string. It allows the notes to ring out like James does

Well, you wanna use your whole hand. Index and ring fingers hovering over the 5th and 6th frets while your middle finger is on the 5th fret on the D string and your pinky on the 7th fret of the A string. Your middle finger and pinky don't move. That way you're always holding onto the G note on the D string and letting that ring out.
