my experience, ymmv, etc., but my 2nd grade teacher was horrible.  I don't remember any particular instruction on how to write properly—all of the focus was on letterforms.  this was for cursive, and I strongly believe that American Cursive is terrible for real, practical writing.  there was nothing at all practical about the way we were taught cursive, and I got *_absolutely zero_* instruction on how to manage being left handed.  I get kept in from recess because my letters didn't look good enough, when I couldn't see the difference.

I also remember, perhaps two years later, finding my page of pencil-written text all smudged from dragging my hand through it, and the side of my hand absolutely black with graphite.

my conclusion is that if they cared—which I guarantee you my 2nd grade teacher didn't—none of my teachers had _the least _*_clue_* how to teach a left-handed kid to write nicely.
