some of my greatest and earliest testosterone highs was playing this game in elementary school. I remember vividly being on one side of the prison, seeing someone on my team team throw a ball to a teammate on the other side of the prison, running toward it in the air, intercepting it like a prime Deion sanders and almost simultaneously striking an opposing player in the back of the head. I was the MAN on the playground for months.

LOVED playing this in elementary school. We'd play with at least 2, usually 4 or so balls. Balls were shields, meaning if you were holding a ball and blocked a thrown ball you didn't go to prison. Get to the end and the crossfire shots and the last person trying to defend themselves, tons of fun.

Catching a ball thrown by an opponent meant that opponent had to go to prison and the one catching the ball did not.

We played with one ball. It was a basketball size rubber ball.
Our team would throw the ball to us in prison so we could catch it and throw it at someone to get out of prison. If you catch the ball, you are safe.
Their team would be back by us to try to catch the ball first so if we got the ball it was easy to get those people close to us while they were running away from us. It made for lots of running back and forth. It was good exercise.

when i was in 6th grade all the 6th grade classes would meet and we would play multiple games of Prison Ball for our free period on Friday's. another element we added was if someone on the opposing side preferably the team captain or co-captian caught the ball the opposing side threw they would yell Prison Break and team members would come back to their team and rejoin

The reason I really like this variation is it stops kids just hanging at the back not really participating and attempting to effectively 'duck out' of being actively involved in the game

About every school in austria plays this all the time. We only use one ball or mabey two. And nothing happens if someone catches the ball

Used to play this in school. But there was only ONE ball.
It was the funniest game ever, because most kids stink at it.

this game is much better on a smaller field of play with only one ball. there's much much more movement and action with only one ball. with multiple balls there's a lot of standing around.

And if you happen to make a basket with a ball, you release all the prisoners back to your side of the court.

what if one player catches another ball? Does that allow one of their players in prison free or just send the player who threw it to prison?

We play where to get out of prison you have to catch a ball from your team.
