Fire safety officers need to have far more power and must have the final say along with the power to force changes. Their recommendations didn't count for much when I worked in a caretaker roll in some private blocks of flats in north london. Landings that should be kept clear were fully furnished including carpets. Elevator doors had a different lock on each floor to enter or exit a lift. Once out the lift would be more locked doors before you can access the front doors to the flat. Despite yearly requests to remove the insane amount of locked doors you would have to pass through and all the combustible materials on these landings, they were never actioned in the 12 years I worked there. In this case it was a resident committee refusing to abide and the fire officers appeared to be powerless.

Mystery Hour....Why do so many Corner Shops appear to maintain profitability despite the apparent lack of activity?
Don't discount the 'Some Like it Hot Mozzarella's Funeral Parlour' possibility.
Many could be a loss-leading 'front activity' for some other commercial proposition. While in 1929 Chicago it was a 'front' for illicit liquor, the modern equivalents are people smuggling, drug distribution and WIMMIN.

Regarding the Caerffili Cheese.. In the 80s and 90s it was mass produced by English dairys. But has since got protected status, so only gets produced by smaller Welsh dairys. Enough to supply to delis but not enough to fill supermarkets. Qualification: From y'ere.

James did not seem interested at all. At least, don't ever be dismissive to them. I wish he'd do a show about cornerstores. I think that would be interesting!
