The Christian Life IS Impossible

The call to holiness can feel like an overwhelming challenge. In fact it can seem downright impossible. But in spite of our brokenness, sinfulness and littleness God keeps calling us to "walk on the water" with Him.

Today Fr. Mike contrasts our "mercenary heart" – which so easily is swayed to pursue the pleasures of the world which draws our gaze away from Jesus – with the "Merciful Heart of Jesus" that seeks to draw us to Himself.

When I hear you speak of your Sundays when you don't get to spend as much time in solitary prayer as you'd like, I think of my life as a first responder and how I recently struggled with my need to do more for a deceased person. I was counseled that God has gifted me with a certain, uncommon strength and mission to serve, that what I sacrifice of myself serves God's purpose and is of great value to the people I serve. To my eyes, all the service you do for parishioners is also a great service to God's purpose and a special kind of prayer that few men are capable of.

Fr. Mike, we all know the Christian life is NOT for the faint of heart. We know from the outset we won't do it perfectly. We trip up; fall a lot. But the faithful get up, just like Jesus did on the way to Golgotha, and get back to it until our mission on this earth is complete, just like He did. People like you, Fr. Mike, are the St. Veronicas in the crowd, helping us along the way at your own sacrifice. You don't sugar coat it: You tell it like it is, but with kindness and real caring, and that means more than words can say. So please, don't be discouraged by those who may misinterpret your enthusiasm and desire to lead us on the right path. I've no doubt the light will dawn on them, through the grace of the Holy Spirit and incession of the prayers that I, and I'm sure many others here, will be offering for them. You and Ascension Presents are a great gift from Our Lord and I am so very grateful for all you've done for me. I'm POSITIVE I'm not alone.
