DeWalt DCF900 Demo + Ford's lug nuts are junk!

In this video I show Ford's failing lug nuts. While swapping out a F150s lug nuts I demo the brute power of the DeWalt DCF900 1/2" impact wrench and why I carry one with me in my vehicles.

The Ford lug nuts on certain years and model vehicles have two piece lug nuts. The part of the lug nuts where socket or lug wrench fits is made of a thin chrome cap that swells up not allowing the proper size socket or lug wrench to fit. It can be a challenge removing them of this happens.
If your Ford has these lugs nuts Id recommend upgrading them asap.

They make intermediate size sockets so if it takes a 18mm you use a 18.5 instead so it accommodates the swollen lug nuts.

An impact wrench should never be used to tighten alloy wheels, absolute stupidly

Almost every Ford truck owner who lets an impact wrench monkey tear up their lug nuts w/o actually torqueing them to an actual spec will eventually have this problem. Even with great care it more than likely will still happen, eventually. The "two piece" lug nut design (with a sheet metal cover over the harder solid core) will eventually get buggered. It just happens. That's why the dealers always have them in stock. I went 11 years, many tire changes and tire rotations at everywhere (dealer, Costco, local tire shop), and a half-dozen times off doing my own brake & suspension work over 199k mi (2012 F150). There are both US and foreign made solid lug nuts that work very well & are sold online for $40-95 (China/Taiwan vs US made) for a full set of 24, 14mm x 2.00mm (whereas the dealer wanted $4-5 ea) nuts. As soon as the first lug nut gets stuck, its time to change them all.

I had a full set of tires shipped to Pep Boys from TireRack.com last August, '22. The Pep Boys tech must have been pissed putting on those heavy tires. A month later when I went to pull off the tires to remove & turn the rotors, all but a couple of the two dozen lug nuts were badly deformed. The first lug nut I was able to hammer on an OEM sized 21mm lug wrench, but then had to use a punch and hammer to get the lug nut out of the socket. The next lug nut it wasn't even close. I had to get a set of "flip lug nut sockets" (metric) that included not only the 21mm socket, but also 21.5, 22 and 22.5mm to accomodate all of the variety of buggered lug nuts, and I still had to hammer & punch out a couple when I eventually did change out all of the lug nuts with new ones. Every Ford truck owner should be informed of this issue, or if you don't do your own service just wait until the service tech's at the shop you go to tell you its time to replace them. At some point they will become unserviceable. ("Turbo" / "stripped lug nut / bolt remover sockets" are also another option for removal.)
