Ticonderoga Class Aegis Guided-Missile Cruisers - The Ticonderoga class of guided-missile cruisers is a class of warships in the United States Navy, first ordered and authorized in the 1978 fiscal year. The Ticonderoga-class cruiser's design was based on that of the Spruance-class destroyer.

The SM-3 is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the earth’s atmosphere and will form part of the US Navy’s Sea-based Midcourse Defense. The missile has new GPS/inertial navigation guidance and kinetic warhead. Raytheon began deliveries of the SM-3 in December 2004. Lockheed Martin has developed the Aegis ballistic missile defence 3.0 capability for the Aegis combat system to engage ballistic missiles with the SM-3 missile.

One of these needs to be preserved. It was such a serious example of Merica.

Beautiful ships, nothing better than seeing “the shield “ 1/2 mile from the carrier, doing her job

I remember when these were being built at Ingalls shipbuilding in Pascagoula. You’d see cars all the time with bumper stickers that stated: Attention Admiral Gorshkov, Aegis is at sea! That was after Gorshkov said the USSR was going to make the worlds oceans their private lake. good old Cold War. Those were the days.

They sure did fit a lot onto and into that shortened Spruance class hull. It must be pretty tight onboard a Tico.

I sever on a Spruance class destroyer and always loved the Tico class cruisers! I served on USS THORN DD 988 and it didn’t get VLS until after I left ship.

The first 5 Ticos were never upgraded with VLS, and in fact, have been scrapped.

Ticonderoga and her awesome suite of MK26 MOD LAUNCHERS were the elite of GMLS, combined with excellent MK99 FIRECONTROL RADAR SYSTEMS. The AN/SPY1 Phased Array radar suite was a GAME CHANGER! IT PROVED Shipboard Phased Array radars were possible. After Typhon Failure. Billboard radar aboard CGN-9 LONGBEACH FAILURE AND CVN65 Enterprise FAILURES. Though obsolete by today's standards. It could hold a tunento the Cobra Judy Phased Array aboard USNS Observation Island 250 ton behemoth. Worlds Largest Floating Radar! Having sailed on Observation Island. I was quite impressed by the minitiarizationthat allowed AN/SPY 1B to become reality.

The Ticonderoga’s were the most technologically advanced cruisers at the time. They may still well be. There are some still in service but they were eventually replaced by the Arleigh Burke Class ships.

Funny how both Russia and China protest whenever an Aegis ballistic missile defense system turns up within a thousand miles of their missile defense network:)

Very good warships, but are very old of the 22 are due to be retired between 2022-2026. Question is what is the US Navy going to replace them with??

So the Tico class have a command control center for the anti warfare officer of the battle group, also a larger VLS capacity and a second 5 inch gun
