BP was previously known as the British-Persian Oil Company. They managed to get a deal in which they paid only around 5% to Iran for the oil the extracted. The coup against Mossadegh in 1949 had a lot to do with BP.

It went wrong when management decided that their only priorities were growth and cutting cost. BP is a disgraceful company.

3:18 market cap is not a great way to compare performance of two companies because we don't know if there were shares issued or repurchased during that time by either companies. Stock returns would be a better metric

indeed BP just didn't lobby as effectively as shell does. Important lessons have been learned. BP did invent the "carbon footprint" ad campaign - a genius move to shift the responsibility of pollution from the manufacturer / source to the responsibility of the consumer. Im sure BP will bounce back with record profits soon.
