The fact that archeologists, of all people, didn’t realize they’re buried is astounding to me when a number of them are in front of a cliff that’s clearly been eroding for thousands of years and moving soil down towards the statues. There’s a debris field (I don’t know the proper natural term for a cliff falling off and sliding down) from the cliff down past the heads of the statues

Geologically, it's more acceptable time-line wise, for their construction before the last magnetic excursion during the major climatic upheaval and melting of ice caps. which would've buried it in sediments. It was not likely to be the only island at the time, but a high point of land until inundated by the sea.
