Here's a real counter example. I had to cover some shifts at work one week, and they all fell on my chest days, so I ended up taking a week off from training chest. Up to that point I had been making steady weight and rep progress on all my chest work, it was going great. Came back from the 'proactive deload' week, chest hit PRs on every exercise. I gained what would have been 3-4 weeks of chest progress just from 1 week of deload I DIDN'T NEED based on any metric.
