I would be thrilled if Cleopatra's tomb was discovered in my lifetime. My Mother said she used to dream and wish to live long enough to see man land on the moon and it did happen. Did it occur to anyone that perhaps that, since she was highly educated, did some massive planning of her life, some chess-like planning, that maybe she took a different route. She possibly had pre-planned all this tragedy melodrama lore about the snake, among other things, and just snuck away into the crowd. She had kids she still needed to see that survived. I read somewhere the all of her kids but her daughter lived and married, then had kids, and the line was lost but it kept going. Those were not times like today. How easy it could have been to change looks and disappear. Send the kids with an aunt or trusted people till she could safely get there. Who would know who wrinkled, gray haired cleopatra would look like. She could have lived as an ‘aunt’ or ‘cousin’ or something. She was revered as the god Isis. The priests would have done everything on their part to make it look real. Hell, maybe this tunnel was an escape tunnel that only the engineers knew existed. They describe it as being big and long. Cleopatra, to me, sounded like a very educated woman who wouldn’t end her life emotionally. Yes, with her land in such turmoil for all those years, she would have had an escape plan in place. The priests could have buried what they thought was a dead woman in that underground massive site so that they could go forth and spread the rumor and convince the Romans she was certainly dead. These are all just stories we’ve heard about her. Who really knows what happened.

So they found a women who died giving birth wearing snake jewelry and clutching to the likeness of a roman ? But otherwise did not locate her tomb. Call me cynical, but a queen with no living heirs would likely go to a lot of effort to give birth to one, and if her husband was dead, would clutch a statue of him. If she died in childbirth, the one attending her may well have taken inspiration from the snake jewelry and fabricated a much more fitting end to the great queen's legend involving ritual suicide, than the less glorious end which involved death in childbirth to a fatherless hair, as a widowed disgraced queen mother. Reputation was everything back then, a concept alien to most modern people.
