Top notch job guys. Lifeguards helping people out of some of the scarier experiences in their lives. Fear of drowning is no joke.

The life guards saved 400 lives in just 2 days from these rip currents. Maybe it's time to stop swimming there

The rescue can (or buoy as some say) in this video is much more effective IMO than the hard ones used in Baywatch and such. The one in this video is made of a soft spongy material and can be comfortably clipped around the person (as shown) so that even a strong wave will typically not knock it off. I have heard of cases with the hard shell cans where a large wave comes and knocks the can out of the persons hand, which increases the chance of drowning and requires the lifeguard to find them again and get the can to them.

As an intermediate swimmer it can be a scary situation. I was at Manhattan beach Labor day weekend 2015 and tide was high with nasty rip currents. We played it safe and did'nt swim where we normally swim. Use Your best judgement and keep it safe.

I'm getting beach certified for NY. Will that license carry over to CA?

Then she posts on her Instagram that she was shredding waves.

Who certified them because the red cross said not to go under with them because when someone is drowning their airway is not open, so if you go under and they inhale water that makes the problem worse

Use a surfski prone paddle board next time. Save everyones energy and keep them above water.

They should use rescue boards, it'll make things a little easier.
