Impeachment of Andrew Johnson: In the wake of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson became the new President of the United States. Immediately he was at odds with the leadership in Congress. Their disagreements culminated in impeachment. Questions below:

1. At the beginning of the Civil War, Johnson was the only Senator from a seceding state to do what?
2. What did the Tenure of Office Act state?
3. Who was the Secretary of War that Johnson wanted to remove?
4. How many votes short of the 2/3 required to impeach in the Senate was the vote?
5. Do you believe defying the Tenure of Office Act reason enough to impeach Johnson? Why? If not why do you believe Congress moved ahead anyway?

In a very Shakespearean view, Andrew Johnson is essentially American Iago

“Dost thou mock me?”
“I mock you nay, by heaven. Would you would bear your fortune like a man!”

I think it's worth noting that although no President has been removed by the Senate, Nixon only resigned because he knew he would have been removed had he not.

I wouldn't say that it was common for a President of one party to have a Vice President of another party. Perhaps from different factions within the same party. Early in American history Presidents and Vice Presidents were of different parties occasionally because of the person who came second in the election became Vice President, it wasn't done for political purposes.

President Johnson stood almost alone against Thaddeus Stevens and his vindictive reconstruction policies. He, like Lincoln, wished for reconciliation between the North and South. After a dozen years of reconstruction the cruelty and corruption of the radicals led to the rejection of reconstruction. I can not think of another President who stood against overwhelming odds for principle. He was a great man.
