New Mexico is a spectacular place. Every kind of terrain except sea shore.

New Mexico resident for many years, and have spent countless hours in the Jemez mountains and Bandelier. That rock at your campground wasn't a clay material at all, it's compressed and petrified volcanic ash (pyroclastic flow) from the Valle Caldera, which erupted about 1.5 million years ago, and spread its ash as far as Kansas.

Looks so peaceful. I've lived in NM for over 20 years. I pass through the Caldera but now I really want to stop and explore. Thanks for showing us this epic landscape.

That cabin was a movie set cabin made for "The Missing". I was lucky enough to stay in the Caldera at the Bunkhouse for a weekend in 2014. I have some great photos and memories of that weekend. The bunkhouse was made into park offices and you can no longer stay in the Caldera. The bunkhouse is near the cabin used in Longmire. There are much bigger chunks of obsidian further up the valley. Back in 2014 we were able to drive up to the valley. You have to hike up there now from the main road. Sometimes if you are lucky you can see a weasel near the visitors center. I believe the 8 room lodge is still in the Caldera and who knows what it was turned into. It is hard to imagine that someone used to own all that land and glad it is a "preserve" so it doesn't become a bunch of mac mansions.

Nice to see the two of you enjoying New Mexico. It can be a mystical place and if you look hard enough the skies are the bluest in the world. Enjoy!

Wait till you get to Oregon. You really need to visit the Paulina Lake/East Lake area of the Newberry Caldera. You want to see a LOT of obsidian in one place? Like enough in one place to fill a really big lake. There is also a lava flow that made tree castings as it cooled quickly around old growth trees. The trees have since decomposed leaving natural round well looking casting amongst the lava flow. Oh, and both lakes are great for kayaking around.

Wife and I lived in Albuquerque for a while and visited Spence springs quite a bit. There’s usually hippies that bathe up there in the nude. Last time I was there it was just the two of us in the hot springs pool in the middle of the winter surrounded by snow, talk about gorgeous!

Beautiful part of N.M.!! Been there a few times on vacation. Look forward to the Colorado trip. If you stop to see Meza Verde you won't be disappointed!! S.W. Colorado is endless with beautiful scenery & history. Oh! By the way if you stop through Chama N.M. there is a awesome place to eat across from the railway station. Don't remember the name though. 🍽
Safe travels to you and enjoy the trip as I know you will! 😉👍🦅🐻⛺🏞
