The way I interpretate SCP-173, is that it's a symbol for urban decay and decadence. It's made of concrete and spraypainted, which could represent run-down city buildings and sketchy alleys in poor urban areas, which also often are spraypainted. The shit and blood could represent all the dirt and lack of hygiene in big urban areas, everybody who went to a big metropolian area once in their lives (or god beware, lives there) knows the stench of some areas. The fact that it's killing you, when not looking, could symbolize the idea that you always have to be aware and on the look-out in urban areas. Urban crime, random acts of violence, muggings, robberies, rape, and murder are common fears of people living in cities, or people traveling sketchy areas. So you have to ALWAYS be aware, and look out for potential threats.
