How to identify biomolecules structurally

This is one of a series of videos introducing chemistry and biochemistry concepts for a class in biology. This video focuses on how to identify biomolecules based upon their molecular structure. I focus on the elements, shape, and different functional groups of the four major classifications of biological molecules.

Basically:
Carbohydrates: CHO and usually in a ring shape / 1 : 2 : 1 when C : H : O
Lipids: CHO and hydrocarbon chain / glycerol group
Proteins: CHON
Nucleic Acid: CHONP

The hard part is determining if it’s a carbohydrate or a lipid
