Powerful Hurricane Beryl has hit Jamaica with heavy winds and rain, damaging buildings and felling trees on the Caribbean island.

The category four storm brought winds of up to 130mph (215km/h) on Jamaica's southern coast.

Social media photos show floodwater pouring down streets, with roofs ripped off by the wind.

The storm has killed at least seven people so far as it sweeps across the Caribbean. It has now been downgraded to a category three storm, and is due to make landfall in Mexico later on Friday.

I love how that tourist spoke on his experience with how rose hall handled the situation. It was very positive and honest.

I've worked with many Jamaicans here in Canada, I'm from Europe but very nice people and cheerful, I love when I've visited Jamaica. The entire Caribbean is a beautiful area in this world.

It's 3:33 AM. It's quiet. Not even raining, no wind. I hope the worst has passed

The tourist said he was at the Hilton, 20 minutes east of Montego Bay. That’s on the northern side of the island, away from the worst of the storm, probably at least 40 to 50 miles from where the center of the storm passed. Not surprising the damage was minimal there. It is not indicative of what happened on the southern coast of Jamaica. But it looks like the storm passed a little to the south, keeping the worst of it away from the island.

From "Spain Side" Jamaica. Coast line areas should be evacuated 🙏 inland areas received minimal damage. We got spared for the most part
